Life in the Punch Line

muschiosauro Splendid prog with a clear Gentle Giant influence. But this is not a copycat band, not at all, since they add plenty of original elements, such as the interplay between male and female vocals, a very modern synergy between the instruments and a songwriting that strikes a perfect balance between pop and prog (a goal that GG themselves always struggled to achieve). The result is a real delight, not only for prog or Gentle Giant lovers, but for all those who love music. Favorite track: Open.

Sven B. Schreiber (sbs) Here we've got another great new band that keeps the heritage of 70's art rock alive in a very refreshing way. The name "Fifth Species" probably is a reference to the five species of counterpoint in classical polyphonic music - and in fact, there's plenty of counterpoint on this album. The band members name "Yes", "Gentle Giant", "Jethro Tull", ""Genesis", "Phish", and "Grateful Dead" as their favorite artists, and I think the influence of the first two is immediately obvious on "Life in the Punch Line". Actually, "Elegy" is a clear nod to "Three Friends". Favorite track: Open.

runciblemoon Despite more than a casual tip of the hat to the likes of Gentle Giant, Yes, Phish etc., Fifth Species are undoubtedly doing their own thing. What's more, they're doing it well. Catchy, wonky, engaging and fun. A most impressive debut album. Favorite track: Open.
JCP

JCP In Fifth Species the spirit of 70s progressive rock has been well and truly revived. There is a real energy here that seems to arise from the band's obvious desire to pay reverence to the classic source material by which it is inspired.

Not only do I enjoy the music thoroughly, but I also enjoy the irony in the fact that the one of the freshest and most unique-sounding albums I've discovered this year owes so much of its sound to such 'old' music. It's a two-for-one deal! Favorite track: City Apart.
therealkurumi

therealkurumi Definite influences of Gentle Giant, Grateful Dead, newer "improg" bands and early 70s funk, but they definitely have their own sound. Some odd meters, but not math-rocky at all. Mainly clever chord progressions and gorgeous vocals. Favorite track: Open.

A morning just like ones before But in the air a different feeling you ignore And it burns in your heart Who knows how everything unwinds When all the friends you thought you knew have lost their minds It could tear you apart Something spurred the vile parts in each of us here to show Nothing takes the place of the enemies that we know Something spurred the vile parts in each of us here to show Nothing takes the place of the enemies that we know This deep foundation we advance Is slipping slowly for the one we gave a chance Is only a fool To hope that I'd awake at night And come to realize nothing shone against the light Is under his rule Something spurred the vile parts in each of us to show Nothing takes the place of the enemies that we know Something spurred the vile parts in each of us here to show Nothing takes the place of the enemies that we know All we believe, ours is the only way Truth in the words, what we together say All we believe, ours is the only way Truth in the words, what we together say How can our unity distraught Be dragged behind by those unhindered by a thought With hope for our friends And what is said for those who lost When they're repeating lies to justify the cost And tell where it ends Something spurred the vile parts in each of us here to show Nothing takes the place of the enemies that we know Something spurred the vile parts in each of us here to show Nothing takes the place of the enemies that we know All we believe, ours is the only way Truth in the words, what we together say All we believe, ours is the only way Truth in the words, what we together say

Found an end to the cycle And the choices are seeming clear I can picture the outcome When the end to it looks so near There's a path to the future In whichever degree we stand But every person is pointing And you can't find a helping hand When you won't take away from it all (Won't take it all) No you can't take away from it all (You can't take it all) When you won't take away from it all (Won't take it all) No you can't take away (You can't take it) I'm beginning to dread it Searching only for what is right Sinking into submission Going over the lines at night Never thought what they told you Could be ever so obsolete There's no way of preparing For a fate you may never meet When you won't take away from it all (Won't take it all) No you can't take away from it all (You can't take it all) When you won't take away from it all (Won't take it all) No you can't take away (You can't take it) What opened after all If you can't see in too clearly When you closed the door you gave away a piece of you What opened after all If you can't see in too clearly When you closed the door you gave away a piece of you Don’t look back Leave the hope for the lucky I've exhausted my chance of peace Time to settle for something Cause the pressure still won't release Just submit to the cycle Link yourself to the dying chain While a world full of people Just survive to prolong the pain When you won't take away from it all (Won't take it all) No you can't take away from it all (You can't take it all) When you won't take away from it all (Won't take it all) No you can't take away (You can't take it) What opened after all If you can't see in too clearly When you closed the door you gave away a piece of you What opened after all If you can't see in too clearly When you closed the door you gave away a piece of you Don’t look back Found an end to the cycle And the choices are seeming clear I can picture the outcome When the end to it looks so near When you won't take away from it all (Won't take it all) No you can't take away from it all (You can't take it all) When you won't take away from it all (Won't take it all) No you can't take away (You can't take it) What opened after all If you can't see in too clearly When you closed the door you gave away a piece of you What opened after all If you can't see in too clearly When you closed the door you gave away a piece of you Don’t look back

Lines 05:53
In the days we were all alone Losing the ones that our memories held so deep Say it won’t leave us on our own Missing the lives that the cycle couldn’t keep With a doubt from the open air Something appeared right before my eyes again From a place I would never care You held the light that I need to be within Ooh, you point and I’m connected Ooh, there’s nothing in between Ooh, to make a new selection Ooh, this side of what you mean In the days we were all alone Losing the ones that our memories held so deep Say it won’t leave us on our own Missing the lives that the cycle couldn’t keep With a doubt from the open air Something appeared right before my eyes again From a place I would never care You held the light that I need to be within (You lose the lines that put you there on recall I can’t escape the feeling stays with me at all You lose the lines that put you there on recall I can’t escape the feeling stays with me at all) Ooh, you point and I’m connected Ooh, there’s nothing in between Ooh, to make a new selection Ooh, this side of what you mean

Second Home 06:18
We’re on the way To distant paradise apart A lonely second home Forget the day And any problems we began Won't find us on our own So relieving to see the glow Of sunlit countrysides below The golden vision of a sky To welcome you back We’re caught within The spell of nature as it flows Through all the open air And no one knows If all the worries we could find Were ever really there There's a song that we start to sing Once we start feeling anything For who could have the bitter heart To tell you it's wrong Time standing still while we’re Here and the days turn to Years in a moment But still not in touch We found our way Through all the mazes that had stood Between our path to home And thinking back There's no belief that either one Was better off alone There's a chill in the evening wind The kind that never seems to end And winding roads take you away To places you lost Time standing still while we’re Here and the days turn to Years in a moment But still not in touch How long did you believe you could hide Everything still is passing by Outside of the room you move In silence there's no way to ignore Leaking through every open door The truth that you turned away How long did you believe you could hide Everything still is passing by Outside of the room you move In silence there's no way to ignore Leaking through every open door The truth that you turned away How long did you believe you could hide Everything still is passing by Outside of the room you move In silence there's no way to ignore Leaking through every open door The truth that you turned away We’re caught within The spell of nature as it flows Through all the open air And no one knows If all the worries we could find Were ever really there There's a chill in the evening wind The kind that never seems to end And winding roads take you away To places you lost Time standing still while we’re Here and the days turn to Years in a moment But still not in touch

Blind Hope 06:12
The comfortable masses are glued onto the screens To hear a new piece of the puzzle Cause every mistake here is one you’ve never seen And every new day is a struggle But I know the wind can’t change itself or right away Taking all of my will to abide Just a few still sitting the seat of trust Any man left must surely have lied They tell me there’s nothing that anyone can say To shed a new light on the meeting From every dark angle is something they can sway To spread the false hope they’re repeating But I know the world can’t hold itself for very long Waiting in the confusion and shame The illusion of balance is coming to a halt And everyone still plays the game How can you be so incurably blinded You may as well not be learning The heads of our friends are shaking in rejection The wheel of our father’s turning How can you be so incurably blinded You may as well not be learning The heads of our friends are shaking in rejection The wheel of our father turns it all around A new bit of motion is coming to the front The steps that lead into an answer Believing there’s reason to why they take the time To carefully cut out the cancer It’s only a mask of darkness on the face we show All the rest know it’s not who we are The growth of a movement is eating at the core But nobody cares for the scar How can you be so incurably blinded You may as well not be learning The heads of our friends are shaking in rejection The wheel of our father’s turning How can you be so incurably blinded You may as well not be learning The heads of our friends are shaking in rejection The wheel of our father turns it all around No way to know when this insanity will end When all of it’s so inconsistent But nothing spells failure like giving up the truth There’s never the time for persistence But I know the world can’t hold itself for very long Waiting in the confusion and shame The illusion of balance is coming to a halt And everyone still plays the game How can you be so incurably blinded You may as well not be learning The heads of our friends are shaking in rejection The wheel of our father’s turning How can you be so incurably blinded You may as well not be learning The heads of our friends are shaking in rejection The wheel of our father turns it all around

City Apart 05:47
A thousand to one Meeting together again The same as it’s been for the years We all were before A city was born In the blink of an eye A valley transformed into life A wonder apart We all come prepared Waiting to breath in the dust Alive in the trust of a friend You know that it's pure And even aside You could feel my own heart In the warmth and the start of a new Reason to be here Mass of life is positive And spreading it onto me Anger feels impossible For everything we could be The world is always closing in A moment that we could see clear We reach for the sun Shedding the fear of the world A life to unfurl as we please And share with a friend The cause that we push Not to change all the rest To what we expressed as the way We’re already there And you might not see The path that we thought to take As something to stake your life On further your own But nothing could change The feeling that lifts me above And brightens the love that we drown The rest of our years in Mass of life is positive And spreading it onto me Anger feels impossible For everything we could be The world is always closing in A moment that we could see clear

Disparity 04:50
I don’t believe the lies That catch us when we fall Too proud to close your eyes And never see at all I don’t sustain the words That move to undermine Our only rule of thirds That kept us from decline The token rhymes Are running thin And keeping out What I want in The more I care The less I work A message needs perfection So every time I try to speak The words I cough Are tongue in cheek And always stuck Inside your mind For your unseen reflection Oh but it’s only happening From the reference point that we trust what we see So why should I spend it all In a spoken stance that you’re sure to not agree And if all is beyond a turn Then I’d rather wade in the shallower words Cause who’d ever give a thought Where you can’t be sure if you’ll ever be heard I try to pen The final deed While holding in The noise I need It doesn’t make Much sense to me Which makes it my selection But don’t hold out For something strong The thoughts I like Are never long This isn’t what I thought I’d say My next might need correction Oh but it’s only happening From the reference point that we trust what we see So why should I spend it all In a spoken stance that you’re sure to not agree And if all is beyond a turn Then I’d rather wade in the shallower words Cause who’d ever give a thought Where you can’t be sure if you’ll ever be heard
